This innovative course presents an account of the major revival in Armenian intellectual, spiritual and artistic creativity over the early modern period, which drew on a rediscovery of Armenian classical sources, and was centred around the cosmopolitan milieux of Constantinople and Venice. It includes hitherto neglected sources such as the periodical Biwrakn (1882-1908), founded and edited by the great-great grandfather of the lecturer; the ostensibly ecclesiological weekly Loys (“Light”, 1905-1906); and, above all, ex-Patriarch Ormanian’s memoirs Xohk‘ ew xōsk‘ (“Thoughts and Words”), of which the lecturer is preparing an annotated English translation.
