Clinical Empathy -skills for communication with patients and their relatives (3 credits).
The course is highly recommended to English-speaking and Czech students from 3rd to 6th year.
Language of instruction: English.
The premise for this discipline is that the patient‘s medical outcomes are affected by the way the patient feels about the doctor. It has been proved that when the patient has an affinity for the doctor, the medical outcomes are improved. Physicians need to gain and maintain trust, in order to gain this affinity and get patients to comply. Starting with the basics of interpersonal communication, each week more specific behaviors (techniques) will be examined to facilitate clinical communication. The emphasis will be put on practical role-plays. Body posture and position, body language and other non-verbal communication, voice inflection and rhetorical technique will be included. Some other relevant topics could be included according to student’s preferences.
