Syllabus

COURSE SYLLABUS:Winter Term:The development of medical terminology from a historical context; methods of study; program of the course. Basic Latin grammatical terminology. Latin word categories. Word forms. Flexion. Pronunciation and intonation. Medical vocabulary (Latin/Greek) in framework of particular disciplines; the context of the English language. Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 1st declension. Prepositions used with the accusative and the ablative case. Vocabulary - basic rules. Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 2nd declension. Ordinal numbers. The structure of an anatomical term. 

TEST 1

Declension of Latin nouns: 4th declension. 

Declension of Latin nouns: 5th declension. Substantivization of adjectives. 

Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - imparisyllaba (tumor - operatio - corpus). Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - i-stems (auris, dens) and exceptions to the 3rd declension rules. 

Irregular and defective comparison of adjectives.  Revision of the 1st-5th declensions Latin nouns, and adjectives of 1st and 2nd declensions.  

TEST 2

Combining all types of nouns with an adjective. Prepositional phrases. Revision.

Summer Term

Revision of the winter term.

Greek nouns in the Latin declension (1st and 2nd declensions): acne - diabetes. ganglion 

Greek nouns in the Latin declension (3rd declension): ureter - basis - trauma; terminological classification of illness: -itis, -osis, -oma. Diagnosis clinica. 

Latin adjectives of the 3rd declension. Third declension adjectives (revision).

TEST 1

Greek stems – their use in nouns and adjectives. Adverbs (a brief survey). Latin numerals. Declension of unus, duo, tres Greek numerals. Medical abbreviations. Names of drugs. Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes. Combining forms. English equivalents. Dividing MT into component parts.  Greek and Latin vocabulary understanding. Identification of an expression within the grammatical system. Practical use of Latin/Greek terms. Diagnostic procedures and surgical interventions in MT. Compounds (noun + noun; noun + adjective; noun + verb; adverb + verb; numeral + noun; multiplied compounds; hybrids). Derivatives. English derivation of a medical term on the basis of Latin.

Linguistic analysis of a complex medical term into morphological components; selecting meaningful units; creating medical concepts. MT practice.

TEST 2 Revision of grammar and vocabulary.

Kurz představuje úvod do jazyka medicíny, seznamující s původem lékařských termínů, jejich jazykovou analýzou a gramatickou strukturou (latinskou i řeckou). Takovéto porozumění odborným výrazům je předpokladem k jejich lexikálně i gramaticky správnému užívání.
