Annotation

Mandatory elective one semester course for 3rd or 4th year students. During the course students will be acquainted with the physiological metabolic changes in pregnancy, and with altered insulin sensitivity in the peripheral tissues.

The diagnostic algorithm of gestational diabetes, and specifics of diabetes type 1 and 2 will be presented. Emphasis is also on factors that, in the view of evidence based medicine, lead to the development of type 2 diabetes.

The course also deals with the basis of prenatal care of the diabetic patient (following the course of pregnancy, mode of delivery) according to the latest guidelines of the Section of perinatal medicine of the Czech Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Emphasis is placed on the prevention of complications of diabetes in pregnancy and diabetic fetopathy.
