Syllabus

CONTENT:

LECTURES:

- Nursing as a science discipline. Paradigm and metaparadigm of nursing – individual, health, environment and nursing activities. History of nursing;

- Holistic approaches in nursing care;

- Ethical standards in nursing;

- Nursing care organizations. Quality and standardization of nursing care;

- Introduction to communication in health care;

- Human needs in nursing care I. – theoretical introduction;

- Human needs in nursing care II. – in the scope of health perception – health maintaining processes, nutrition and metabolism, elimination, activities and exercises, rest and sleep, in scope of perception and recognition, self-approach and self-respect of the patient, in scope of social roles repletion (satisfaction) and interpersonal relationships, sexuality and reproductive abilities, in scope of stress management and stressful situations and in area of religion, faith and values;

- Home care and hospice care;

- Pain as a nursing issue;

- Measuring techniques in nursing care;

-Mobility and immobility in nursing care;

- Iatropathogenesis and sororigenesis – harming the patient by inappropriate behavior of health care providers;

- Health care provider´s duties;

- Theoretical introduction to individual nursing procedures and interventions (e.g. vital signs monitoring, medication administration, methodology and technique of biological material collection etc.);

SEMINARS:

- Hygiene and pressure ulcer prevention;

- Bandages and dressing techniques;

- Activities and exercises;

- Vital signs measuring and monitoring;

- Communication with the patient – practice and exercises;

- Hygienic requirements for health care facilities, disinfection and sterilization, hand hygiene in health care;

- Medication administration;

- Application of injections – i.d., s.c., i.m.;

- Collecting of biological material.

Annotation

The subject is framed as theoretical and practical. It systematically defines nursing as a modern discipline with its own philosophy, system of values, subject of research, and with its own methodology.

It makes students familiar with historical development of nursing in Czech Republic and elsewhere in the world, and with the main tasks and functions of nursing in society. It allows students to understand the main task of professional nursing practice, which is to maintain and satisfy essential needs of patients /clients, families and communities.

It provides introduction to the classification of human needs based on a different disciplines and authors and it focuses on reactions and manifestations of unsatisfied needs of healthy people, sick people, people with disabilities and the dying. From the practical point of view, there is a focus on teaching of nursing procedures and interventions in laboratory conditions and in clinical practice.

Practical exercises allow students to acquire main manual skills and assurance of a safe and quality implementation of nursing procedures and patient related interventions.
