Lecturer: Matthew Shane Renfro, B.A.   Practical courses:

1. Latin and Greek nouns of all declension types. Greek stemms used in international medical terminology I.

2. Adjective and noun collocations. Revision of all declension types. Main groups of the suffixes (terminology of inflammations, degenerative diseases and tumours). Examples in clinical and pthological reports. Greek stemms used in international medical terminology

3. Latin and Greek prefixes. Word formation - derivation and composition (haematuria X uraemia, perivertebralis X paravertebralis, etc.) Examples in medical and pathological reports.

4. Latin and Greek suffixes. Word formation - derivation and composition (gastrorrhexis X gastropexis, nephrotomia X nephrectomia X nephrostomia, etc.) Reading authentic clinical diagnoses.

5. Revision. Memorabilia (in situ, clinici scriptu,…), remedia (names as analgetica, tocolytica, etc.), abbreviations (lat. dex., vs...).

This elective subject is designed for dentistry students. It follows upon the subject Basic Medical Terminology.

The aim is to revise the medical terminology previously acquired by the students, to practise basic Latin grammar and to broaden the student’s professional vocabulary in the form of additional Latin and Greek derivatives and composites. Study on authentic stomatological diagnoses.
