Introduction to toxicology of plants, mushrooms and animals. Selected alkaloids, terpenes, saponines, risk to health.
Toxic effects. Mechanism of action. Absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of toxic agents, their interactions.
Alcohols (methanol, ethanol, glycols), drugs of abuse (stimulants, opioids, hallucinogens). Mechanisms of their action, risk to health.
Toxic exposures from environmental and occupational setting (hydrocarbons and their derivatives, toxic metals). Effects of selected organic and inorganic compounds
Food additives (antioxidants, emulsifiers, sweeteners, preservatives, stabilizers, colourings, flavours, acidity regulators, bulking and anti-caking agents). Credit test.
Students are introduced into problems dealing with environmental pollution. The discussion is focused on contamination of food, toxic effects of drugs, addiction and poisons in plant kingdom.
