Advanced molecular techniques are now routinely used in the microbiological laboratory. Student of this course will thus learn common molecular methods, such as PCR and its modifications, MALDI-TOF, next generation sequencing (NGS) and others utilized in microbiology. In addition, the students will acquire knowledge about specific incorporation of these methods in the clinical diagnostic procedures.

During the first practical, the students will perform an isolation of nucleic acids, PCR setup and subsequent detection using gel electrophoresis. The second practical will aim at performing an identification of bacterial cultures using MALDI-TOF.
