Annotation
The aim of the course is to increase and strengthen students' knowledge and skills in the main areas of hospital pharmacy. The course follows and further develops the lessons from compulsory subjects Pharmaceutical Care I, II, and Social Pharmacy.
Key areas of hospital pharmacy are emphasised such as medicines supply, medicines storage and transfer to hospital wards; dispensing medicines to patients; clinical trials; handling of addictive substances or diagnostic preparations; legislative and clinical aspects of the preparation of sterile and non-sterile drugs and dangerous substances; quality assurance and the involvement of the pharmacist in the interdisciplinary teams of the hospital. Attention is also paid to areas of hospital drug policy in which the hospital pharmacist plays an irreplaceable role – for instance the efficient handling of expensive medicines; positive lists management; involvement in a drug commission or ensuring the quality and safety of the patient when healthcare is provided.
Furthermore, students are aware how to apply the principles and tools of pharmaceutical care in fewer nosological units (follow-up to Pharmaceutical Care II). Drug dispensing and individual counselling with the patient, maximizing the effect and minimizing the risks of selected drugs typically encountered in a hospital pharmacy are trained by practical cases in the form of interactive seminars and practical exercises.
The course is part of the internal specialization of Hospital Pharmacy and prepares students for the follow-up course named Chapter from Hospital Pharmacy II (controlled practice in hospital pharmacy.
