Syllabus

The seminars will take form of online webinars as follows:

Communication wiht students - via email at addresses provided in IS 

ZOOM webinars - at the time for which the seminars are planned in the time table, i.e. Thursday 16:00-17:30. 

Study materials, practice exercises, and distance continuous assessment tasks will be uploaded on the faculty MOODLE available here: https://moodle.prf.cuni.cz Tasks handed in by email will be disregarded. 

Assessement - see Course Completion Requirements

Week 1: key contract-related vocabulary: types of contracts (parties and subject matter); contract drafting: structure of a contract

Week 2: boilerplate clauses - peculiarities of contract language: doublets and triplets, navigating words (here/there, such, said) and legalese; collocations (typical phrases used in individual clauses)

Week 3: liquidated damages vs. penalty clause;

Week 4: conditions vs. warranties; time of the essence clause; use of conditionals: focus on linking word 

Week 5: Contract for the sale of goods (warranties and reservation of rights)

Week 6: Employment contract vs. agency agreement 

Week 7: Lease agreement

Week 8: Security agreement; loan agreement

Week 9: Contract for work

Week 10: Licence agreement

Annotation

Kurz probíhá jako praktické cvičení a je určen studentům se základní znalostí závazkového práva, jejichž jazyková úroveň dosahuje alespoň úrovně B2 dle Evropského referenčního rámce (viz. http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/cefr/).

Cílem kurzu je naučit studenty lépe chápat, vykládat a překládat jednotlivá smluvní ustanovení napříč smluvními typy; dále si studenti osvojí ustálená slovní spojení a terminologii základních smluvních typů a seznámí se se zvláštnostmi jazyka používaného ve smlouvách.

Předmět je zakončen kolokviem.

Students will learn to better understand, and interpret, as well as translate, individual contract clauses that may appear in a wide range of English contracts; they will become more familiar with typical phrases used in individual contract clauses and they will analyse the language of the most common contract types.

End-of-semester assessment: based on continuous assessment.
