Economic and Law in Banking and Finance

Class at Faculty of Social Sciences |
JED002

Syllabus

Each student chooses one topic for which he will be the main presenter. In addition, everybody also chooses one topic for which he will be the discussant.

The main presenter is free to choose which of the suggested papers he would like to use for his presentation. He is even free to use any paper(s) not listed on this syllabus as long as he keeps the topic of the given seminar meeting.

The main presenter prepares his presentation of the topic which should take 50 minutes (including a discussion during the presentation). The main presenter gives the prepared presentation to all other participants of our seminar at least one week before his presentation (I would actually prefer to receive the presentation prepared for seminar number T during the seminar number (T-1) so that there would be two weeks to prepare. But in the case somebody is not able to do this in this way, it is enough to provide the prepared presentation one week before the seminar.) In this way main presenter assures that out of the extensive set of the papers provided in this syllabus all the seminar participants will concentrate on the same small subset of papers relevant for the seminar meeting.

There is no need for this presentation to be prepared as a formal paper. It is perfectly fine to prepare it as an outline, as a lecture note or in any format the main presenter wishes.

Everybody is supposed to prepare for presentation, so that everybody understands what is going on during the presentation. And in particular the student who had chosen to be the discussant has to prepare for the presentation. The duty of the discussant is to prepare short talk (5-10 minutes) complementing the main presentation. The discussant may choose to react directly to the material provided by the main presenter or the opponent may choose to talk about something complementing the main presentation. The discussant does not have to provide the text of this talk to seminar participants, but I would like to receive the outline of his talk at the beginning of the seminar.

Annotation

The seminar has an ambition to establish a school of doctoral studies in economics oriented towards the application of economic methodology (asymmetric information, game theory, contract design) to the analysis of banking and finance.
