Interwar American Left: Politics and Ideology

The course will cover the birth of radical American Left at the end of World War One, will try to look at its various groupings. A special attention will be given to the Communist Party of the USA and its international links and its relationship to the Soviet Union.

The American Left had its heyday during the Great Depression in 1930s. What were the attitudes of American Communists and radicals to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his presidency? Was the interwar American Left isolationist or interventionist? The course will also deal with Communist International doctrines, that of

Social Fascism and of Popular Front.
