The aim of this course is to introduce students the realist paradigm of international relations. In this course we explore a set of core concepts and ideas that underpin the principles of realpolitik. We introduce the key authors that formulated the tenets of realism. Students will learn why interstate conflicts are inevitable and how (whether) they can be mitigated.

Teaching method

This course is divided into three blocks and concluding session. The first block introduces the basic concepts of realism that shall accompany us throughout the whole course. The second block discusses the nature of the international system, its structure and how it influences state behavior. In the third block we discuss the fundamental questions regarding the world order. In the concluding session we sum up the material and discuss the state of realism in the 21st century.

Lectures and literature are mutually complementary – i.e. the lectures are not designed to substitute the literature – thus students are strongly advised to read the readings and attend the lectures.
