Current Issues of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Lecturer: PhDr. Lucie Hindlsová, M.A. Email: lucie.hindls@gmail.com Class: Monday 5pm-
6.30pm Lecture/Seminar: 1/1, exam, 6 credits Characteristics: The core goal of this course is two-fold: first, to acquire knowledge of major events and historical background of the Israeli - Palestinian conflict; secondly, to discuss and explore major issues of the conflict. The course focuses on the Israeli - Palestinian relations from the following angles: ? In its first part, the course will refer in general terms to the relations between Israel and its neighbors since the WW2 until the end of the Cold War. Its purpose is to introduce and outline the major milestones in the history of the conflict. ? This, mainly historical part, will be followed by the second part, which aims to focus upon the main issue of negotiations between Israel and its neighbors. These issues, such as the question of the future status of Jerusalem, the Palestinian refugees, the water resources, borders and the Jewish settlements represent the main obstacles to success in most negotiations. This part will also discuss various proposals and initiatives already put forward by various sides. ? The last part of the course will address the most recent developments in relations between Israel and the Arab states. It will focus on the contemporary questions from the collapse at the Camp David Summit through the Gaza withdrawal to the Lebanon Crisis. Assignments: ? Attendance and active participation ? Submission of a term paper (seminar paper) of about 12-15 pages (BA students are required to submit a paper of 10-12 pages) ?
