Course description: Are multinational states viable? Is democracy less stable in multinational states? Is economic development more difficult in multi-ethnic states? This course addresses the main concepts, questions and empirical findings in the growing literature of ethnic politics. After the introduction of central concepts in the field of ethnic politics, the effects of ethnic identity on democracy, party politics, secession, conflict and economic outcomes are explored.

Requirements:

The course is organized in six sessions. In each session a lecture is followed by a discussion. Students are required to read the literature of each session, participate in the discussions in the seminar and to hand in a reaction paper (ca. 1000 words) and an essay (ca. 2000 words) to receive 4 credit points.
