Following the definition of culture by Michel Foucault (the way a society pass down its knowledge), the first objective of cultural geography studies is the understanding of the place of space as a social frame for the transmission of knowledge. Furthermore, geographical studies intend to highlight the cultural aspect of the social relation to the space: How this relation contributes to the production of collective norms, representations and identities? More widely, to what extend the space play a role in the organization of the social life?
In this respect, the lesson proposes an introduction to some key features of the spatiality of societies as well as a presentation of the useful mobilization of the category of space for social sciences inquiries.
