Syllabus

A) Art before the First World War (birth of modernism, abstract tendencies in art, etc.)

B) Art in the interwar period (dada, surrealism, poetism, constructivism, abstraction, art of totalitarian regimes, etc.)

C) Art after World War II (abstract expressionism, socialist realism, art brut, action art, pop art, conceptualism, etc.)

D) Contemporary art

Annotation

The course is devoted in the winter semester to Euro-American and Czech art of the 19th century. It characterizes the historical and ideological sources of European classicism, romanticism, and historicizing movements in 19th century art in general.

It also traces the birth of of modern art in the work of the Realists, Impressionists, Symbolists and Secessionists. In addition, it outlines the various artistic movements within "Czech" art history from the late 18th century to around 1900.

In the summer semester, attention is focused on the interpretation of modern "isms", paying attention to the situation of interwar art in the world and in the Czech lands. It does not neglect the development of art after the Second World War and the various artistic tendencies in the postmodern situation, extending to the present day.
