Sylabus

Each class meeting consists of a lecture focusing on a single aspect of English syntax. This includes: 1: Basic idea of syntax and its application in the English language: i.e., constituent units of meaning: word, phrase, and clause. 2: Verb: what they are and what they do.

Transitive and intransitive, passive and active, verb phrases and phrasal verbs. 3: Verbals: what they are and what they do. Verbal phrases, infinitives, gerunds, and participles. 4: Nouns: what they are and what they do.

Subjective and objective – including objects of verbs, verbals, and prepositions. 5: Pronouns: what they are and what they do, including their function as nouns, conjunctions, and possessives. 6: Adjectives: what they are and what they do, including relative clauses. 7: Adverbs: what they are and what they do, including subordinate clauses 8: Prepositions: what they are and what they do, prepositions as adjectives and adverbs. 9: Conjunctions and determiners: what they are and what they do. 10: Overview: English as a functional syntactic language

Anotace

The course consists of a series of lectures focusing on the function of English syntax – in the context of educated English, English as it is used in academia. It is designed to facilitate student’s ability to read and comprehend advanced texts.

Having completed this course, the student is more prepared to study in English abroad. Sample texts and readings for the exam are chosen accordingly, and in the context of subjects offered at HTF.
