INTRODUCTION AND BASIC TERMS. Voltage, current, capacitance, resistance, conductors, Ohm's law, electrochemistry, definition of potentials, electrode potentials, electromotive force, concentration cells, osmotic (Donnan) equilibrium, types of membrane potentials.

MEMBRANE THEORY OF BIOELECTRIC PHENOMENA. Ionic equilibria, ion channels, Nernst equation, passive electrical properties of nerve and muscle membranes. Cable theory. Electrotonus, membrane capacitace, length cocnstant and time constant. Conduction velocity in myelinated/nonmyelinated fibers. Saltatory conduction.

EQUIPMENT FOR BIOELECTRIC MEASUREMENTS. Amplifiers, devices, stimulators, oscilloscopes, microscopes, hardware and software equipment, data acquisition and their analysis.

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES. Extracellular and intracellular recordings, electrodes for recording of bioelectric signals. Voltage clamp, current clamp, and patch clamp setups.

GENERAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY OF CELLS. Measurement of bioelectric phenomena in nerve and muscle cells, membrane potentials of plant cells.

GENERAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY OF TISSUES. Electric potentials of animal and plant tissues, electric organs in fish, electrophysiologiac measurements in Xenopus oocytes and chicken embryos, bioelectric phenomena in plants and animals.

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS IN VITRO. Peripheral nerves, neuronal tissue cultures, model synapse: neuromuscular junction, brain slices.

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS IN SITU. Electric activity in peripheral nerves, skeletal muscles, spinal cord, and brain. Sensoric organs and receptor potentials in sensoric organs.

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS IN VIVO. Electrodes implanted to brain, stereotaxis, measurement of electric activity in defined brain area. Organism as a spatial conductor, theory of biopotential measurements in a spatial conductor. Electrocardiography, electroencepahalography, electromyography, electroretinography.

Please note, the lectures are given in czech language only.

Facultative course (lecture and laboratory exercises) for baccalaureate degree of the study program biology. Recommended in the 3rd year for the students planning to continue on the Mgr. degree in the neurobiology or animal physiology. Course is recommended for 6th semester (summer terms) as a subsequent course for course "Neurobiology" (B150P36, 5th semester). In the 8th semester can be supplemented with course "Physiology of senses" (B150P28).
