Syllabus

1. Introduction to phytoremedia technologies - methods and their advantages and disadvantages.

2. Mechanism of contaminant uptake - uptake and transport of contaminants by plants depending on their chemical properties. Individual phases of xenobiotics metabolism: transformation, conjugation, compartmentation.

3. Oxidative stress and plant defense strategies - mechanisms of defense against oxidative stress.

4. Toxic metals and radionuclides - uptake, accumulation by plants. Toxic effects on plants and radiotoxicity. Hyperaccumulation and tolerance. Heavy metal deficiency. Heavy metal contamination and radionuclides

5. Organic substances - transformation and degradation - degradation of herbicides, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, nitro compounds, pharmaceuticals etc.

6. Use of phytoremediation methods in practice - phytomining, biomass, increased efficiency of phytoremediation. Other types of bioremediation technologies. Use of bacteria, algae, plant fungi, animals and ecosystems.

Annotation

In these lectures we will deal with decontamination technologies that use them to remove contaminants from the soil, water and air of living organisms. We will deal with the mechanism of contaminants uptake, their metabolism in the organism and the impact of contaminants on living organisms.

Last but not least, the possibility of using these processes in practical applications on real contaminated areas will be discussed.
