Syllabus

Reaction design and selection: Design of reaction pathways in practice, selection guide to multiple options from perspective of green chemistry and thermodynamics.

Glassware and equipment: Types of glass(-ware) and equipment and their compatibility with predicted reaction conditions including chemical reagents and reactivity.

Solvents and reagents: Selection of solvent for a reaction, purification of laboratory chemicals, chemical storage and their safe handling based on available information.

Running a reaction: Establishment of reaction conditions, process optimization and reaction yield including thermodynamic and kinetic considerations.

Work-up and purification procedures: Different work-up procedures, product purification techniques and degrees of purity. Differences in reaction scale and identification of an appropriate method.

Product analysis: Overview of analytical techniques, selection of appropriate methods for product identification and sample preparation for analysis.

Annotation

The course deals with practical aspects of synthesis design, its implementation and product analysis. How to identify the most appropriate synthesis of desired product, what materials and equipment to use, how to identify and mitigate risks of the reaction(s), how to perform the reaction(s) with maximum efficiency and establish optimal reaction conditions, isolate and purify the product and choose analytical methods to determine its structure and purity.

The course is taught in English. The exam will be in English or Czech depending on the preference of the student.
