Amino acids and peptides. Protein structure and function. Enzymes: mechanism of enzyme action, control of enzymic activity. Carbohydrates and their metabolism. Lipids. Biological membranes and membrane transport. DNA and RNA. Flow of genetic information. RNA synthesis and splicing. Protein synthesis. Citric acid cycle. Fatty acid metabolism. Oxidative phosphorylation. Photosynthesis. Biosynthesis of membrane lipids and steroid hormones. Biosynthesis of amino acids and heme. Biosynthesis of nucleotides. Amino acid degradation and the urea cycle. Hormones and their action.

The course covers the whole area of a basic biochemistry. The lectures are largely based on the explanation why and how the chemicals undergo enzyme catalyzed reactions. Particular metabolic pathways are presented in the context of the entire metabolism. The structure-function relationships of involved chemical compounds is emphasized.
Lectures are delivered in Czech to Czech students. For Erasmus students the lectures are in English. Depending on the number of students enroled the course is arranged as lectures or in another way (colloquium, consultations).
