Internet and bioinformatics

Class at Faculty of Science |
MC250P07B

Syllabus

- Visualization of biomolecules using the PyMol program

- Protein and DNA databases (Uniprot, GenBank, etc.)

- Basic bioinformatics tools (BLAST, comparison of DNA and protein sequences in the Jalview program)

- Structural databases (Protein Data Bank, etc.)

- Drawing chemical structures in the ChemSketch program

- Bibliographic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, etc.) and Zotero citation manager

Annotation

The subject is lectured in English during the winter semester and in Czech during the summer semester!

The course teaches the use of internet databases and computational tools that are useful for biochemists. It covers structural analysis of biomolecules using the PyMol program. The second part of the course covers the most significant protein and DNA databases, along with basic bioinformatics tools. It includes comparing protein and DNA databases, searching for related proteins, and detecting key amino acids for protein function. The course also covers the use of the ChemSketch program for drawing chemical structures, as well as the introduction of the most important bibliographic databases and the Zotero citation manager.

Please note that due to the course being taught in a computer room, capacity is limited.
