LIST OF EXERCISES

Viscosity: determination of viscosity coefficients of water and acetone mixtures at various compositions, statistical evaluation of experimental data.

Cryoscopy: determination of molar masses of unknown compounds.

Partition equilibrium: study of the system: benzoic acid-water-toluene.

Electrolysis: determination of the Faraday constant, statistical evaluation - the precision and truthness of results.

Polarography: measurements of the limiting current under different experimental conditions.

Buffer capacity: determination of buffer capacities of acetic buffers at various compositions.

Conductivity: determination of the acidity constant of various weak acids using the Ostwald's dilution law.

Dissociation constant: spectrophotometric determination of p-nitrophenol acidity constant from the dependency of the degree of ionization on pH.

Activation energy: estimation of the activation energy of decomposition of colored complex from rate constants obtained at various temperatures by spectrophotometric measurements.

Reaction order: determination of reaction orders of reactants using the initial rate method.

Annotation

Principles of fundamental physico-chemical phenomena are demonstrated in ten exercises. Basic thermodynamic, kinetic and electrochemical characteristics, as equilibrium constants, rate constant, buffer capacity etc., are determinated.

Required data are obtained by means of chemical analysis (e.g. titration, extraction) and by common instrumental methods (UV-VIS spectrophotometry, polarography, potentiometry, conductometry, electrolysis, viscosimetry). Emphasis is given on appropriate interpretation of measured data and their mathematical and statistical evaluation.
