The aim of the subject is to provide basic understanding of scanning probe microscopes and their application in contemporary basic science. We will learn the basic theories and construction schemes of scanning tunneling microscopes and atomic force microscopes.
In addition, we will discuss various measurement principles including advanced spectroscopy (e.g. tunneling, non-elastic tunneling or force spectroscopy). We will learn basic concepts of emerging field of on-surface chemistry as well as recent progresses, which enable to synthetize novel molecular systems which are not available by traditional organic chemistry in solution and gas-phase.
For understanding the lectures, basic knowledge of physical, organic and quantum chemistry is assumed.
