Syllabus

1) Introduction to social science research and sample surveys (basic concepts), quantitative and qualitative research strategies

2) Research ethics

3) Quantitative sample survey as a project (stages of research, operationalization, types of variables)

4) Sampling procedures, data collection techniques

5) Questionnaire design

4) Demographic sample surveys, available data sources for quantitative research - practical examples of specific research projects.

6) Processing sample survey data (data matrix, transformation of variables). Knowledge of basic statistical methods is assumed, in the course statistical procedures will be discussed in the context of working with individual survey data.

7) Presentation of assignments and discussion

The course objective is approaching the methods of collecting and analyzing data from survey samplings to the students of demography. The focus will be in particular put on the practical application in demography practice, including both preparatory phase of survey, correct formulation of questions or matters of making scales, as well as the following statistical analysis and correct interpretation of results.
