Biostratigraphy of the terrestrial sediments of the Cenozoic

Class at Faculty of Science |
MG422P59

Syllabus

The course informs participants on principles of biostratigraphy. It provides a discussion on characteristics of units, terminology, historical aspects, biostratigraphical correlations, and relations to other branches of stratigraphy. Usage of units and practical problems are demostrated. Some parts of the course has an interactive form focused on discussions on selected biostratigraphical topics. It is also paid an attention to reworking of fossils. Standards in biostratigraphy, general questions on taxonomy, and bilogical evolution comprise another whole of topics. In the final part of the course, each participant elaborate and report on a topic published in scientific literature.

Examination: oral with accent on understanding to main principles of biostratigraphy.

Annotation

The goal of this course is to gain a deeper knowledge on biostratigraphy of the terrestric (kontinental) Cenozoic sediments, and possibilities of their practical use. The method is based on the detailed knowledge and analysis of the mammalian assemblages containing small mammalian taxa (e.g., the Cricetid rodents) with fast sequence of generations, good migratory habilities resulting in the extent geographical distribution. Correlation with standard Marine scale: research of sections in litoral regions with tertestric ingressions.

The course helps to evaluate and orient in published data; practical use of methods (washing/screening).
