Syllabus

Light and its diffraction on periodic planar patterns. Diffraction of electrons, neutrons and X-rays from 3D periodic structures. Fourier transforms.

Diffraction from powders and single crystals. Ewald construction for various experimental setups.

Processing of powder data. Peak position and intensities. Unit cell dimensions refinement. Peak shape functions. Extraction of strain and size parameters. Pattern indexing. Crystal structure solution and refinement from powder data.

Processing of single crystal data. Structure solution and refinement.

Electron diffraction. Structure and defect imaging.

Annotation

The course describes diffraction methods and the procedures for their processing as used in mineralogy. The possibilities and limitations of certain experimental techniques are explained. Also, real structure influence on the diffraction patterns is addressed.

Due to the pandemic situation, the course in the summer semester of the academic year 2020/2021 takes place in a combined online form and self-study of provided selected literature. Information on how to connect to an online lecture will be provided to enrolled students via e-mail.
