Igneous Petrology

Class at Faculty of Science |
MG440P09

Syllabus

Main topics of the course:

1. Properties of magma and magma crystallization.

2. Magma generation, segregation, transport, emplacements and differentiation; processes in magma chambers.

3. Partial melting of the upper mantle; mid-ocean ridge magmatism.

4. Hot-spots: ocean islands, plateau basalts and large igneous provinces.

5. Active continental margins.

6. Partial melting of the crust: granitic magmatism.

7. Continental rifting and alkaline magmatism.

8. Precambrian and “strange” magmatic association: komatiites, anorthosites,…

Annotation

This course follows the introductory petrology lessons and offers deeper understanding of composition, formation and diversity of magmas and magmatic rocks. In the first part, it focuses on elementary properties of magmas and processes of their formation, transport, emplacement, differentiation, and crystallization.

Second part of the course concentrates on magmatic associations typical for individual geotectonic settings.
