Basics of mechanics. Stress and strain. Normal and shear stress, Mohr's circle. Plane strain, axial symmetry. Strength. Stiffness. Stress paths.

Water in soils. Pore pressure. Effective stress. Partial saturation, capillary water, suction. In-situ stress in soil layer. Drainage. Drained and undrained loading.

Swelling and collapse. Frost heave.

Seepage and permeability. Flow nets.

Soil compressibility. Laboratory testing.

Prefailure behaviour of soils.
