Syllabus

Basic Tasks  of Engineering Geology (EG); Methods; Legislative Framework

Follow-up to the course „Introduction to EG“. Relevant legislation, codes of practice, standards, Professional bodies, societies (“ČAIG”, “ČKAIT”).

Special Topics of EG investigation; Hydrogeology aspects

Extreme situations: undermining, seismicity, radon, occurrence of explosives in the ground, brownfields, contamination, temperature effects, vibration. Geotechnical Monitoring. Hydrogeological aspects: ground water (GW) levels, GW chemistry, protection against GW, GW control.

Role of EG in exploitation of raw materials and rocks Excavating soil and rock, workability, stability of natural and man-made slopes. Exploitation of building materials; earth structures.

EG conditions for stability of natural and man-made slopes

Conditions and causes of slope movements; classification of slope instabilities; Remedy.

EG problems in soil/rock improvement Dewatering – surface, deep; soil/rock compaction. Decreasing permeability of rock; permeability criteria  for hydrotechnical structures. Jet grouting. Permeability control by special foundation techniques. Soil replacement and improvement. Stabilisation: mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrochemical. Reinforced soil/rock. Anchoring, nailing.

Infrastructure. Hydrotechnical structures Choice of lineage. Methods of construction. Underground and surface infrastructure. Excavations and filling.

Buildings Geotechnical categories. Foundation depth. Industrial infrastructure. Landfills.

Traffic structures – Roads, Railways Choice of lineage. Earth structures, fills, cuts. Bridges, deep excavations. Standards. Codes of practice.

Underground structures Adits, tunnels, pits, caverns, underground repositories. Rock material/massive classifications. Tunnelling techniques. Role of water.

The Czech Standard for Engineering Geology investigations (“ČSN P 73 1005”) Structure, detailed comments on the document.

Annotation

Use of applied geology in different fields of man-made technical activities ( site investigation, engineering geological setting of investigation area, evaluation of engineering geological conditions of construction, earth works, excavation and workability of building materials in constructions, problems of remedial measures in rock mass, tasks of engineering geology in site (foundation soil, engineering geological date for design of foundations, technology of spacial foundation, general evaluation of engineering geological and geotechnical conditions of building).
