Mathematical Modelling in Geomechanics II

Class at Faculty of Science |
MG451P71

Syllabus

1. Finite Element program Plaxis

Program popular in engineering practice.

Introduction to the program, specification of geometry, input of material properties (constitutive law and parameters), boundary conditions, initial conditions. Mesh generation. Calculation controll in phases. Post-processing including animations.

Application for typical geotechnical problems:

Drained triaxial test. Settlement of circular footing, rigid and flexible. Submerged construction of an excavation. Undrained river embankment. Dry excavation using a tie back wall. Construction of a road embankment. Settlement due to tunnel construction. 2. Finite Element program Tochnog.

Program used in research and for complex analyses.

Introduction to the program, input file for a simple problem (drained triaxial test). Pre- and post-processor GiD. Mesh generation, post-processing including animations.

Annotation

Part 2 of the 2 - term lecture. The course covers foundations of the mathematical modelling needed for solving boundary value problems in geomechanics.

Special attention is paid to the formulation of constitutive models for soils and to the overview of numerical methods used in modern software. Exercises with the FE code Tochnog stimulate individual training of the subject.
