Syllabus

Introduction: Position of Geophysics in the frame of other surveying methods, the main principles of the application of Geophysical methods, brief description of the most frequently used Geophysical methods. Geophysics in Civil-engineering part includes topics related to:

1) Construction of linear structures (measure of cover thicknesses, bed rock surface mapping, intensity of weathering and detection of tectonic zones, rock classification and geotechnical parameter estimation based on seismic measurements, archaeological and UXO surveys)

2) Specific features of geophysical surveying in urban areas (different demands during different construction project phases, foundation surveys, underground structures (construction and diagnostics of tunnels, mains, sewers) and no-dig technologies, road and pavement subsurface diagnostics)

3) Void and cavities detection, historic underground, abundant mains, karsts

4) Landslides surveying (predisposed slide surfaces, monitoring)

5) Surveys related to water projects (dam and its bed tightness, leakage detection, surveying of bottom deposits)

6) Landfill sites surveys (spatial mapping of landfill body, thickness of waste deposits estimation, quasi-homogeneous blocks outlining, water tightness, places of inflows into and outflows from waste deposit body detection, preferential ways of contamination spreading, monitoring) Geophysics in Hydrogeology part includes topics related to:

1) Porous aquifers (characterization of aquifer parameters based on geophysical measurements, sedimentary basin mapping and surveying of quaternary deposits, permeable and impervious layer separation, water level mapping, preferential ways of water flow estimation)

2) Fissure aquifers (structural mapping, tectonic zones detection, direction and slope of tectonic lines prediction, characterization of tectonic zone filling, refinement of water well and borehole position, drink water source protection)

3) Borehole measurements (well-logging methods, hydraulic parameter measurement)

4) Water contamination related topics (possibility of use of geophysics for contamination detection - both, aqueous and non-aqueous types, preferential ways of contamination spreading, optimization of decontamination treatment, monitoring of remediation process efficiency)
