Annotation

The Theoretical Biology Seminar is primarily a meeting place for students of the Master's and Doctoral programmes in Theoretical and Evolutionary Biology. It is also compulsory for these students. However, students of other biological or natural science disciplines are also welcome to attend the seminar, as well as, for example, students of philosophy, mathematics and statistics interested in living systems.

The aim of the seminar is to identify and clarify the basic concepts of theoretical biology and to learn heuristic and methodological techniques and approaches applied in conceptualizing key characteristics of life and its evolution.

The seminar will also address the practical problems that students face in writing their first-publication papers. Thus, the seminar in theoretical biology in general offers a platform for discussing current theoretical and methodological issues in the research work of individual participants. Occasionally, the seminar will also feature guest presentations that touch on recent discoveries and future perspectives in theoretical and evolutionary biology and related fields.

The seminar also focuses on an active exchange of experiences, discussions on aspects of individual PhD projects and information on current developments in the field. The format, course and structure of the seminar is modified according to the current state of the field and by agreement between the seminar chair and the respective students. The active participation of PhD students is expected (papers, lectures, etc.). The seminar is conducted in English if there is a foreigner among the students.

The seminar programme is adjusted each semester, with student presentations usually alternating with those of invited guests.
