Syllabus

Climate, climate system and feedbacks. Observed state of the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, Earth’s surface. Radiative and energy balance. Hydrological cycle and water balance. General circulation of the atmosphere and the ocean. Internal variability of climate system, ENSO, NAO, QBO. Tropical cyclones, local circulation systems. Diurnal and annual cycles of climatic elements.

Classification of climate, characteristics of basic climatic zones and types. Climate of the Czech Republic.

Quality and homogeneity of climatic data. Introduction to technical climatology and bioclimatology. Application of satellite data in climatology. Current problems in climatology. Extreme events. Urban climate.

Climate changes in the history of the Earth, causes of climate changes.

Global and regional climate models. Future climate change scenarios.

Annotation

The subject is intended for the students of the program Applied meteorology. They will get to know the basics of general climatology, regional climatology, processing of climatic data.

They will also be given an overview of history of Earth’s climate, the development of climate change scenarios and selected applications of climatology in related fields.
