Vibrational Spectroscopy in Biophysics

Class at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
NBCM017

Syllabus

1. Basic principles of vibrational spectroscopy. Classical and quantum-mechanical model. Infrared and Raman spectroscopies. Resonance Raman effect.

2. Advantages and disadvantages of Raman and IR spectroscopies for biophysical, biochemical and biological studies.

3. Experimental vibrational spectroscopy. Basics of Raman and infrared absorption experiment.

4. Advanced techniques of Raman spectroscopy: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering, Raman optical activity.

5. Applications of IR and Raman spectroscopy to study structural properties and interactions of nucleic acids, proteins and porphyrins.

Annotation

Theoretical and practical course focused on applications of vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman) in biophysics and biochemistry. Organized as a block (3 weeks) hands-on training out of semester (august/september) in the form of an international "Summer School on Vibrational Spectroscopy in Biophysics and Biochemistry".

Schooling in English. Possibility of individual experimental research using sophisticated spectrometers.

Convenient for students of the 3rd and 4th year of the specialization biophysics and chemical physics, doctoral students F4 (biophysics, chemical and macromolecular physics), and students of biophysical, chemical and biochemical curricula from other domestic as well as foreign universities.
