Syllabus

A. Basic operations in chemical laboratory. Laboratory techniques (heating, cooling, gas handling, work in inert atmosphere). Purification and isolation operations (filtration, extraction, crystallization, precipitation, distillation, sublimation). Safety rules.

B. Inorganic chemistry 1. Redox reactions - preparation of Cr2O3. 2. Redox reactions - preparation of CuSO4. 3. Complexometric reactions - preparation of [Cu(NH3)4]SO4. 4. Precipitation reactions - preparation of Cu2[Fe(CN)6]. 5. Precipitation reactions - preparation of KAl(SO4)2 × 12H2O.

C. Organic chemistry 1. Drying of ethanol and chloroform. 2. Preparation of ethylformiate. 3. Preparation of acetanilide. 4. Preparation of ethyl acetate. 5. Isolation of natural compounds - natural dyes and caffeine.

D. Analytical chemistry 1. Preparation of porous silicon, gravimetric determination of porosity 2. Acid-base titrations - determination of NaOH. 3. Complexation titrations - determination of hardness of water. 4. Potentiometric titrations - determination of NaOH.

Annotation

Basic operations in chemical laboratory. Experimental techniques and preparative methods in inorganic and organic chemistry. Methods of analytical chemistry.

Students choose - after consultation with teacher - a subset of experiments from the list for six six-hour batches.
