Syllabus

Aqueous solutions - physical properties of water, ions, pH, buffers. Amino acids, Primary and three-dimensional protein structures.

Physical forces controlling protein structure and non-covalent interactions of proteins with biological systems and synthetic surfaces. Acid and basic properties of proteins, hydrophobic interaction.

Lipids, micelles, and bilayers of amphiphilic molecules, cell membranes. Structure of nucleic acids and stabilizing physical forces, replication, transcription, and translation.

Enzymatic catalysis, substrate specificity, inhibition. Antibodies and antigens, membrane receptors, ligands.

Affinity chromatography, immuno-analysis, receptors for biosensors, DNA and protein chips. Interface between synthetic surface and biological media, protein adsorption, interaction with blood, interaction with cells.

Nanobiotechnologies, current trends.

Annotation

Introduction to biochemistry for students of physics and technical sciences focused on applications interdisciplinary applications in biotechnology and medicine. Water, proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, nucleic acids.

Intramolecular and intermolecular interactions of biological macromolecules. Biospecific interactions, such as, receptor-ligand, antibody-antigen, enzyme-substrate, complementarity of oligonucleotides.

Affinity biochemical methods, affinity biosensors. Interaction of synthetic materials and objects with biological environment.

Nanotechnology.
