Syllabus

1. Surface structures, Miller indexes, Wood and matrix notation.

2. Adsorption on surfaces, surface diffusion, desoprtion.

3. Thermodynamics of surface processes, surface tension, free energy, phase transitions, roughening transition, reconstruction, surface relaxation, crystal equilibrium shape - Wulff theorem.

4. Surface reciprocal lattice, electron diffraction (LEED, RHEED).

5. Ion interaction with surfaces, - sputtering, preferential sputtering, method of ion diagnostics - SIMS, SNMS, ISS.

6. Surface annealing, thermal cleaning, thermal desorption spectroscopy TDS.

7. Electron spectroscopy - XPS, UPS, AES, EELS.

8. Scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy.

Annotation

Surface preparation in surface analysis, thin film physic, plasma physics and vacuum science: gas interaction with surfaces, surface annealing, single-crystal surface processing. Surface thermodynamics.
