Introductory seminar on physics of geometrically frustrated systems

Class at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
NFPL243

Syllabus

Introductory seminar will focus especially on, but not limited to, the following topics:

- geometrically frustrated lattices and systems

- symmetry protected physical properties

- spin-orbit coupling

- topological properties, conductivity

- magnetic ordering and excitations

- prospects of technical applications

- advances in microscopic techniques allowing investigation of these topics

Annotation

Regular ordering of atoms into crystal lattices is known for more than a century. However, ordering of magnetic moments on these atoms in the lattice represents frequently a non-trivial issue. Namely in the case when the geometry of crystal lattice does not allow (easy) realisation of all exchanges/interactions between magnetic moments. The course is focused at the experimental methods of the study of these systems with geometrical frustration. Significant part of the course is focused on individual study of these problematics and their presentation.

The course is intended for master students.
