Academic Writing for Mathematicians II

Class at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
NJAZ202

Syllabus

Writing English academic texts in mathematics (thesis introductions, conference and talk abstracts, journal articles, reviews, and other genres).

English language development exercises (grammar, vocabulary, collocations).

The above is indicative: the exact nature of the syllabus will develop according to the needs of participating students.

The primary focus of the course is acquiring proficiency in academic English vocabulary, grammar and style by means of regular writing exercises and verbal discussion in English. Extracts from a range of English mathematical texts (some chosen by participating students themselves) will be used as a basis for learning techniques of language and composition at a micro and macro level (for example, formal and technical English vocabulary, sentence structures and cohesion, and typical journal article structures).
