Class at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
NMET004

Syllabus

Wave equations for electromagnetic waves, propagation of electromagnetic waves in atmospheric conditions, refraction index, its vertical profile and connections with meteorological parameters, optical phenomena in connection with refraction of light (astronomical, earth and lateral refraction, green flash, superior and inferior mirage, sinking and looming of horiren etc.). Propagation of acoustic waves in atmosphere, wave equation, connections between speed of propagation and meteorological conditions, attenuation of sound in atmosphere, shock-waves, acoustic coalescence.

Complex velocity and complex refraction index in atmospheric conditions, absorption of electromagnetic waves, Mie theory, scattering of electromagnetic wave on the molecules and on aerosol particles, scattering of light on the droplets (rainbows, corona, glory).

Halo phenomena.

Meteorological visibility, propagation of light in clouds, Trabert formula. Principles of distant sounding methods in meteorology.

Annotation

Scattering and absorption of electromagnetic and acoustic waves in atmosphere, optical and acoustic phenomena in connection with stratification of air, water droplets, ice and aerosol particles.
