Syllabus

History and state-of-the-science of the fluid mechanics; types of fluids, forces; hydrostatics and hydrostatic balance.

Fluid kinematics, Lagrangian and Eulerian description of the flow; streamlines and trajectories; continuity equation; material derivative.

Conservation laws and symmetry methods in fluid mechanics.

Closed set of equations; initial and boundary conditions; Newtonian fluid; viscosity; Navier-Stokes equations; ideal fluid; Euler equations; rotational and potential flow; Bernoulli equation and Kelvin’s circulation theorem.

Geophysical fluid dynamics; non-inertial frame and Coriolis effect.

Waves, linear wave theory, stability analysis and introduction to the wave-mean flow interaction theory.

Flow energy and transport and energy and momentum in the flow.

The turbulence.

Annotation

An introduction to the fluid statics, kinematics and dynamics. The students are introduced to general laws and analytical methods of a flow description and test their utilization on concrete simplified problems.
