Class at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
NMET520

Syllabus

1. Synoptic climatology – definition of subject

2. Approaches to description of atmospheric circulation: classification, circulation regimes, persistent anomalies, modes of variability, blockings, cyclone and storm tracks, etc.

3. Classification and typization: methods and approaches; subjective, objective, mixed; of circulation patterns, weather, air masses, etc.

4. Relationships between atmospheric circulation and surface climatic and environmental variables, including their time variability and its causes

5. Connections between long-term changes in atmospheric circulation and long-term changes in surface climatic elements

6. Utilization of synoptic-climatological approaches in meteorological and climatological practice

Annotation

The course concentrates on topical issues in synoptic climatology: i.a., methods of description of atmospheric circulation, subjective and objective classifications of synoptic patterns, weather, and air masses; relationships between atmospheric circulation and surface climatic and environmental variables.
