Syllabus

1. Fresnel equations for media with simultaneous dielectric a magnetic response; layered structures and inhomogeneous media

2. Transfer matrix formalism for 1D-3D structures; calculation of transmission and reflection coefficients; plane wave expansion method

3. Photonic crystals: band structures, symmetry, forbidden band, defect states, density of states, in- and out-coupling of light, tunable photonic crystals, applications

4. Metamaterials: concept of effective permeability and permittivity, resonant behaviour and dispersion, examples of structures

5. Applications of metamaterials: optics in negative refractive index media, perfect lens (focusing under the diffraction limit), invisible cloak, tunable metamaterials
