Radiative Processes in Astrophysics

Class at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
NTMF070

Syllabus

Electromagnetic radiation - basic characteristics and quantities. Elementary emission processes in astrophysics, emission by relativistic particles, radiation by systems of particles.

Interaction of radiation with the cosmic environment (charged particles, plasma, dust, atomic and molecular gases) - scattering, absorption, emission. Equation of radiative transfer.

Propagation of radiation through gravitational fields - gravitational lensing. Cosmological effects including cosmological redshift, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich and Sachs-Wolfe effects.

Radiation from astrophysical sources and methods of its detection from radio waves to gamma rays. Our current view of the universe across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Annotation

Electromagnetic radiation of nonrelativistic and relativistic charged particles and of their ensembles, emission from astrophysical sources, propagation through the cosmic environment. For 1st and 2nd year students of theoretical physics and astrophysics.
