Quantitative Methods in Educational Research

Syllabus

Témata kurzu:

1. Logika, výhody a omezení kvantitativního výzkumu (ve srovnání s kvalitativním výzkumem), formulace výzkumného problému a hypotéz, hledání indikátorů pro jednotlivé proměnné, typy proměnných.

2. Reprezentativita (pojmy vzorek, populace, aj.), typy pravděpodobnostních a nepravděpodobnostních technik výběrů, chyba výběru a návratnost - konkrétní příklady a ukázky tvorby výběru (vzorku).

3. Příprava dotazníku (role teorie, rešerše výzkumů, využití standardizovaných škál, dotazníků), konstrukce a uspořádání dotazníku, formulace otázek, řazení otázek, nejčastější příklady špatně formulovaných otázek.

4. Uvažování za horizont jednotlivých otázek - tvorba sumačních indexů (škál, summated rating scales), reliabilita a validita sumačních indexů.

5. Možnosti pilotáže a její vyhodnocení, úprava dotazníku a volba způsobu sběru dat, příprava datového souboru, čištění dat, analýza a interpretace dat.

Annotation

The course will build on basic introduction to quantitative research within the course Introduction into Theory and Methodology of Educational Research (ÚTMK) and it will focus on the preparation and construction of the most used research tool - the questionnaire. Students will familiarize with the most common errors in creating, analyzing and interpreting data from questionnaires using specific examples of educational researches.

Other quantitative methods (eg. observation, experiment, didactic tests, semantic differential) will be discussed with potential candidates individually. Students will also become familiar with the available databases of journal full-text articles (EBSCO, Proquest, JSTOR, Wiley InterScience e-journals, Science Direct, Sage fulltexts, ERIC) and possibilities of their use in the formulation of the research problem and designing a questionnaire.

The aim of the course is to introduce practical aspects of the designing, implementation and evaluation of quantitative research. Practical demonstrations will also include the basic statistical analysis of research data (using SPSS statistical software), including multivariate methods.

However the statistics is not the goal and content of this course (dr. Chvál´s course Statistics in Educational Research deals with this issue).

Students will design their own research tool and pilot it. At the meetings and in the e-learning environment the participants will be able to share their research experience.

The course will be concluded by a conference.
