The aim of this course is to introduce the students to the lexicology of Modern English ? including both Lexical Semantics and Word-Formation. The key aspects of the historical development of the English lexis and its socio-cultural context will also be studied.

The stylistic layers of the word-stock will be explored as well as relevant issues in lexicography. Having completed this course, students should be able to demonstrate a familiarity with linguistic concepts and terminology that will enable them to theoretically explain relevant features of English word-formation and lexical semantics and to apply theoretical notions in practice.
