Annotation

The Entomology course introduces its students to the insect system (Hexapoda: Insecta); and together with the follow-up master's lecture Special Zoology of Invertebrates (OPNB3B105C or OPNB4B007C) provides a comprehensive overview of selected invertebrates inhabiting the Czech Republic and Central Europe. The introductory part of the lecture is devoted to a general introduction to insects, including an introduction to recent views on the phylogeny of this large group.

In the following part, students will be introduced to currently recognized orders including primarily wingless and palaeopteran insects. Emphasis is placed on the groups found in the country, their use in the classroom, as well as general practical applications (economic benefits, field pests, disease vectors, etc.).
