Annotation
The lectures introduce the students to crucial events, people, and cultural phenomena in politics, economy, and culture of the Antiquity, as well as in religion, mythology or geography; the focus lies in the Mediterranean area together with the neighbouring cultural fringe of the Near and Middle East, and includes brief excursions into more distant parts of the world whenever the second life of Antiquity is concerned (more on the latter in the courses Classical Traditions I and II). The topics follow a general chronological order with particular emphasis on cultral phenomena relevant to subsequent history of Bohemia and areas of Europe beyond the Roman Empire. Introduction to the topics:
1. Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean culture and the "Greek Dark Ages" in the context of the Eastern Mediterranean;
2. The Archaic period;
3. The Classical period;
4. The Hellenistic period;
5. The origins of the cultures of the Apennine Peninsula, the Etruscans;
6. The Roman Republic - the conquest of the Mediterranean;
7. The Roman Principate - a unique form of government;
8. The Roman Dominate - the barbarization of the Empire, the domination of Christianity, the intercourse with other religions (Judaism and Islam);
9. The culture of Late Antiquity;
10. Romanization and Christianization of Europe - Central Europe and its cultural exchange with the Mediterranean;
11. The significance of Antiquity for the 21st century and its global reintroduction; The student is supposed and encouraged by the teacher to continuous work with published sources from the Antiquity and the relevant literature. Knowledge of the lectures' subject matter and recommended literature is required for the exam.
